Expo

Went to the Diabetes Expo yesterday and worked in the Tour de Cure booth in the “ADA World” section. Succesfully managed to resist most of the schwag but did end up with a battery operated “personal fan and flashlight” from Accu-check. It will probably last about 25 minutes. It’s no wonder drugs are as expensive as they are when you see some of the stuff these companies hand out.

Talked with lots of people at the booth, and I think several of them will sign up for the ride. I really started running down towards then end, it’s a long day on your feet. I spent almost the whole day at the booth and didn’t go to any of the talks. Wasn’t really interested. There didn’t seem to be anything particularly new this year except an in home, single-use hematocrit tester (I can just imagine how expensive that is). I suppose it’s for all those times you’re suddenly aenemic or something. The same company sells EPO: The Home Game.

Lindsay was there riding her bike at the booth all day. She put in something like 80 miles on the trainer.

Luis Tiant was the central guest of the show. Other than that, nothing really dramatic at all.

There are no bike racks at the World Trade Center. There’s also no way to get from the upper level to the lower level by road. The Silver Line elevator is also not operational, leaving stairs the only way down. Damn annoying when you’re carrying a 50 pound bike. When I worked at the WTC many, many years ago, it was easy to navigate the place. Now it’s a nightmare. Of course, back then all that was there was the WTC, a couple of huge parking lots, the ferry dock, and the fish piers. Now there’s a whole maze of buildings, two tunnel entrances, tunnels stacks, two or three hotels, and the courthouse. I suppose that’s all good, but why, when this city develops something, does it always have to end up as a twisty turny maze that no one can navigate, and why do they always ignore bikes in the traffic pattern? On the way back, I had to ride through a temporary sidewalk construction in front of the Children’s Museum across the old Northern Ave bridge to get back to the city. Stoopid.
