Sunday 81
Big cycling weekend. It was good. But I forgot sunscreen on both days. I now have Bell Ghisallo shaped sunburns on my head.
Monday I went 80 miles following the Bikes Not Bombs
100k ride marks. I’ve never done their ride as 1) they keep moving the
date around, 2) I end up with a conflict and 3) their minimum
fundraising is too high. But what a nice ride it is.
Apparently, this year it was in the spring as opposed to last years, autumn, so the road markings were still good. I only missed one turn where a ½ mile section of road had been repaved obliterating the markings. It was a fortunate thing, actually, because about a mile up the road is the Stony Brook Audubon wildlife refuge, which was open on July 4 and I could refill my water bottles. Continuing down the road, it was pretty clear I was on the wrong track when I got to Wrentham (the last town before Rhode Island) and the road started to get busier. Anyway, it was very pretty ride, following the Charles and other smaller rivers, through the forests and other places. You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day, picture postcard perfect in every way. I averaged 16.3 mph over the 80 miles, which was pretty good esp.
considering the first and last parts were through city traffic.
I found another swimming hole on this route. It’s called Farm Pond in Sherborn. Everything in Sherborn is named “Farm $something”. Farm Road, Farm Street, Farm Lane, Old Farm Road, Farm Pond Lane. It’s amazing you can find anything there at all. maybe that’s the point. Only Sherborn residents can park in the parking lot, but anyone can use the pond provided you can get there under your own steam. The down side is that it’s 25 miles from here, which would make for a short swim unless you
make a whole day of it. But even though it’s farther away than Walden Pond, it’s much less crowded and, frankly, a bit nicer.
This will probably be it until the TdC starts. Tomorrow is supposed to be pouring rain, my parents get here on Thursday, and I should probably do some work between now and then. Plus errands.
