2005: The Year

Year end summary. Why? Is there really anything interesting enough in my life to require a year end review? No. But here it is anyway.
Movies summarized earlier.

2005: The Movies

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

My Netflix rental list for 2005. Netflix ratings go from a high of 5.0 to a low of 1.0 which, of course, correspond to my A through F.
The best movie I saw this year was Murderball [Netflix] [IMDb], and I really don’t think it’s because it was the most recent.
Other outstanding ones were The [...]

‘Wired’ is winning tour of race, brain - The Boston Globe
Is this the movie Tyler Hamilton was supposed to be central to? I remember there was an “issue” something about whether Bjarne Riis would let Hamilton wear the CSC uniform to reshoot a couple of scenes after he had both left for Phonak and been [...]

New wheels

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

Bought a pair of rebuilt/reconditioned Neuvation M28 Aero’s this morning. This will allow me to replace the one damaged in the crash at a good cost, and still have an extra rear wheel for when and if it’s needed.
Cost: $179; Odo: 5590

Murderball

Monday, December 26th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
This may be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Yes, it’s a documentary, but it’s expertly crafted with compelling characters. The filmmakers spent 2½ years following quadriplegic rugby (a/k/a murderball) players on the road to the2002 World Championships and 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. The pacing was just right, having to explain what [...]

After the Thin Man

Monday, December 26th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
The second of the Thin Man movies, this is just as good as the first. It also explains some of the back story and we get to meet Nora’s family. Apparently, though in love, all of the money comes from Nora, and the family is not entirely happy that she ended up with [...]

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Monday, December 19th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price) is the product of a marriage between a member of the titled D’Ascoyne and a man beneath her station. Louis’ father dies at his birth leaving his mother penniless and unsupported. Throughout his childhood, Louis is told that he is part of the D’Ascoyne family and that he could someday [...]

Out of the Past

Monday, December 19th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
The gold standard of film noir, this film has it all. Recently gone straight gumshoe Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) explains to his girl all about his sordid past which has caught up with him. Ultra bad guy Whit Sterling, played by Kirk Douglas in what may be his best role ever, is a perfect [...]

[Netflix] [IMDb]
Peter Lorre is a child murderer in Fritz Lang’s first talkie. Kids have either gone missing or turned up dead and it’s giving the legitimate criminals a bad name and making life difficult because of that huge numbers of police on the streets. The the criminals decide to catch the killer on their own. [...]

The site

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

Well, it’s about done.

There are a few pieces of information missing, but the layout and design are finished, and it’s ready to be populated. I expect things will be slow until spring. Nobody really thinks about it until, like, March or April, so there’s plenty of time to publicise it.
I’ve got a few announcements [...]

It’s going to be a long, long winter.

The Station Agent

Monday, December 12th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
A fantastic independent film. Quoting the synopsis from Netflix:
When his only friend dies, a young dwarf named Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) relocates to an abandoned train station in rural New Jersey, intent on living the life of a hermit. But his solitude is soon interrupted by his colorful neighbors, which include a struggling [...]

The Madness of King George

Monday, December 12th, 2005

[Netflix] [IMDb]
King George III of England (Nigel Hawthorne) goes nuts and is “put away” for a bit to “recover.” In the mean time, the Prince of Wales (Rupert Everett) moves to get appointed Prince Regent and push the old man off to one side. A fantastic cast of characters including Helen Mirren as Queen [...]

The season is over

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

After Friday’s snowstorm, I took the road bike off the road for the remainder of the winter. Now I’ll have to get a winter bike! I’ve still got the MTB and the cargo bike though. Unfortunately, the trails go off limits starting Jan 1 until April 15, so I guess that leaves the around town [...]

I particularly like
Enough to make you visible to even the dimmest motorist.
Kind of expensive, though.
And, indirectly, these.
