2005: The Movies
My Netflix rental list for 2005. Netflix ratings go from a high of 5.0 to a low of 1.0 which, of course, correspond to my A through F.
The best movie I saw this year was Murderball [Netflix] [IMDb], and I really don’t think it’s because it was the most recent.
Other outstanding ones were The Station Agent, Grave of the Fireflies, Shaun of the Dead, Trainspotting, Amelie, Citizen X, and Shaolin Soccer. I note most of these are foreign language films.
I think the worst movie I saw this year (or tried to watch, since I ended up fast forwarding through it) was O Fantasma. Dreck. Total. Dreck. Cringemaking dreck.
There were a couple of okay gay-themed movies, notably Nico and Dani, and Burnt Money, also both foreign language films (Spanish and Argentine).
I was most surprised by Grave of the Fireflies. Surprised because it’s an anime movie and I’m not an anime fan at all. But it’s so well done and the story is so compelling that it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also so sad that I’m not sure I could watch it again.
I sent two back unwatched (marked dnw) and returned one unfinished (marked dnf); it was a TV show, I watched one episode of the three on the disk, and it was pretty cliche.
These are just the Netflix movies, though. There were a bunch of others that I either bought or saw in some other context.
I wonder if this list says reveals any hidden personality trait.

FYI, I was in a Circuit City this week, and they had Shaolin Soccer on DVD in the $5 bin. Couldn’t pass that one up for so cheap.
Happy New Year. *

OK, that comment got messed up. There was supposed to be a smiley with a party hat on, not an open HTML tag.
P.S. Oldboy still rules.
