Creature from the Black Lagoon

[Netflix] [IMDb]

Perhaps the most recognizable 1950s era monster, he holds up well as these things go. As everyone knows the story is a take on Beauty and the Beast. It was originally filmed in 3-D and it would certainly be nice to be able to see it in 3-D. I wonder if there’s some techincal reason why it can’t be. Many years ago, Channel 38 showed an entire night of 3-D movies (selling the glasses at some convenience store or something) and that turned out really well. They showed two Three Stooges shorts, InfernoGorilla at Large, so it can be done. What they would do about the glasses is another question, but easily solveable.

As with Revenge, there seems to be an environmental message in the movie above and beyond the “don’t mess with nature” theme. There’s a shot of the heroine (Julie Adams) on deck of the ship smoking a cigarette which she then tosses into the water. The camera follows the cigarette and the next shot is the moster looking up at the cigarette. So maybe it was just a visual device to server as a pivot point. But, with my 2006 sensibilities, I just wanted to say “Hey! Pick that up!” Making me wonder, too, is that the very next shot shows the results of scientists dumping boatloads of poison into the lagoon: dozens of dead fish floating on the surface. There certainly had to be some other message there. But maybe not. It was 1954, after all.

Makes a good New Year’s Eve movie, though.

Rating: C; would watch again.

We’re just three days into 2006, and you’ve already received your matching sensibilties?

Mine must be held up in the mail… damned bureaucracy.
