Kill Bill vol 1

[Netflix] [IMDb]

A woman (Uma Thurman) is left for dead when her wedding is attacked and everyone is massacred. She wakes from a coma four years later and sets out for revenge. I liked the different styles of filmmaking presented in the movie, but I thought it was a little weak on plot. I had to read some of the other reviews to see what the backstory was. But stylistically, I really liked it. Director Tarantino’s use of color and especially music is unusual and compelling. Switching from a yellow theme, to black and white, to silloutte, to anime and back again is impressive and works well. Some of the fight scenes looked a little stilted and by-the-numbers (lunge, 2, 3, block, 2, 3), all hail Yuen Wo-Ping.

I’m not a big devotee of the genres Tarantino was trying to pay homage to, but I am familiar enough with them (blacksploitation, spaghetti westerns, Hong Kong martial arts, &c.) to recognize most of the elements. I liked this enough to re-order my queue to put Vol 2 at the top. I also am further convinced that Lucy Liu is one of the prettiest women in the country. I didn’t even recognize Daryl Hannah, and Uma Thurman also has ugly feet.

Rating: B; would watch again.
