Wilde

[Netflix] [IMDb]

A biopic with Stephen Fry as Oscar Wilde and Jude Law as “Bosie” Douglas. Supposedly, this follows the story as told in Richard Ellman’s biography, a book I have but have never read (partly because it’s over 700 pages). The film concentrates on the relationship between Wilde and Douglas more than anything else, but it does cover a good bit of the trial and some of its aftermath.

Whether Douglas was the sociopath he was in the film, I don’t know, but if he was it’s hard to imagine how anyone would be interested in him in any way at all. He was so cringe inducing, that it even made the film hard to watch in some places. Physically, Fry was a good casting for Wilde, both are very tall and well spoken, but I didn’t think I got a really good feel for his personality.

2 Stars ; would not watch again
