Trekkies
Denise Crosby (”Tasha Yar”) hosts a look at the Star Trek fan phenomenon.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I read the reviews saying “Hillarious” and “Laugh out loud funny” but I didn’t really find it that way. While it’s a good film, I didn’t find it the riotous look the reviews claimed. I got stuck at a Star Trek convention once. One place I used to work used the hotel next door for its Friday night happy hour, and there was a convention one weekend. The woman at the next table over was knitting chain mail. Now that I think of it, if it was chain mail, it must have been a Star Trek and something else (SCA?) convention. But I digress.
I just have a hard time figuring out why people would devote so much energy towards a television show. I mean, I like the show and I devote quite a bit of time to books and a bit to movies, but this is a whole other dimension (so to speak). It’s one thing, I think, to attend a book group or chat about a film for an hour or two. I could even see dressing up for a convention from time to time as a lark. But this totally takes over people’s lives. I mean, showing up for jury duty in a Star Trek uniform and insist on being called Commander at work? Then again, is this any different that trainspotting or stamp collecting? I’m not sure. I guess the issue for me is devoting so much time to someone else’s “vision.” OTOH (how many hands have I used so far?) I’ve never played RPG, so maybe it’s like that. I don’t know. It just seems very odd to me.
There were some very funny parts of the movie, but I wasn’t sure whether I was laughing at them or with them. The inventor guy that rode around in the Christopher Pike wheelchair in the Kyle Broslofski hat was awesome. But perhaps the funniest line in the whole film was Walter Koenig who said “I don’t want to be one of those people who’s still doing the thing after 20 years…. oh wait…. it’s been 30 years and here I am! Oh my god! I AM one of those people!”
; would not watch again
