Non foliage

Took a shortish ride yesterday. Was hoping for 50, but ended up at 44. I forgot that this weekend is the Head of the Charles regatta until I got to the Esplanade and saw the crowds. It took forever to get through them and I ended up walking a good portion of the way. Not so easy in cleats pushing a bike through a crowd. Thinking the crowds might be smaller on the Boston side since the viewing is better from Cambridge, I stayed over here. That was a mistake. They’d closed Memorial Drive (like they do on Sundays), so that was an error.

Then crossing the bridge over the tracks right before Alewife (next to Summer Shack) a girl was waddling up the middle of the walk yaking on a cell phone leaving no room to pass on either side, so I slowed down to see where she’d go. She moved to one side, so I moved to the other. Then she moved to the other side, so I moved again and passed here. As I passed, she started hurling invectives the like of which I’ve rarely heard. So I stopped and said “what?” She started screaming things like “fucking faggot face” and similar and took a swing at me. She didn’t hit me, but she did knock my computer off the bike. Luckily I saw it. I don’t want to have to buy another.

Welcome to Cambridge. What a nut job.

I wanted this to be a foliage trip, but it turns out I was too late. Most of the trees were either brown or bare. I rode up to the end of the Minuteman, then down 62 to Cambridge and back through Lincoln and Trapelo Road. Not many bikes on the road, really. Fewer than I expected, but then the leaves are gone. Maybe they were all somewhere else.

    What?!

    That’s all I can say.

    What?!

You took the word right out of my mouth.

If I’d been clear thinking, I’d have taken her picture to share with the whole web wide world. I had my camera with me to take leaf pictures, but I was in such disbelief, I didn’t think of it.

Oooh, yeah. I’d love to hear what Tourette’s inspired verbiage she would have spouted if you took her picture!

I doubt it would have changed. She seemed pretty much at the limit of her creativity. It was all she could do to add “face” at the end of it all.
