Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom / Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter … and Spring

[netflix] [IMDb] [Official site]

A monk lives in a floating house on a remote lake and raises a boy in his charge. The film never leaves the lake, but follows the boy’s changing life. Spring (childhood) sees the boy learn some tough lessons about life, Summer (adolescence) finds him learning about love and lust, Fall (adulthood) brings even harder lessons away from the lake, Winter (maturity) bring resolution, and … Spring (childhood) brings an abandoned boy into his life where the circle of life begins again.

Reading some of the comments on IMDb, this film is apparently chockablock with Buddhist imagery and symbolism, most all of which was lost on me. Apparently, the animals that show up in each season mean something; who knew? It’s an interesting story and compelling viewing, in any case. The photography is stunningly beautiful. Definitly worth seeing, but not twice.

4 Stars ; would not watch again

Put some New York minimalist composer Philip Glass music with it and you’ve got a hit.
