Oooh! I’m going to be on telly!

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

I’ve been asked to participate in a “roundtable discussion” to be taped and edited for tv. The taping is on 05-Apr in Connecticut. I have no idea how long it will be between taping and airing, but I can’t imagine it could be less than a month, but who knows. The topic is “ongoing struggle [...]

Very bad news. Very, very bad news. Very, very, very bad news.

Speakeasy - Press Release - Best Buy Acquires Speakeasy
But I couldn’t explain why any better than this.
Or more professionally than this.
Damn.

Food store humor

I bought some olives today.

Casino Royale

Monday, March 26th, 2007

[netflix] [IMDb]
The best Bond since Dr. No, and possibly the best ever. Gone are most of the wizzy gadgets and a lot of attention paid to the story. The story was remarkably faithful to the book, the most faithful since Dr. No. It was updated in some non-material ways: Le Chiffre was banker to terrorists [...]

Alexander the Corrector : the tormented genius whose Cruden’s Concordance unwrote the Bible by Julia Keay

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

[amazon] [MBLN]
A fascinating biography of the guy who wrote a 2.5 million word concordance of the bible. (It’s been in print since first published in 1737.) Born in Aberdeen, he knew things that were dangerous to some very powerful people. Cruden was sent to madhouses several times in his life, but the author makes a [...]

Batman Begins

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

[netflix] [IMDb]
Could a movie possibly be any more “meh” than this one? Christian Bale plays an okay Batman. Michael Caine plays an okay Alfred. Liam Niesen plays an okay bad guy. Gary Oldman was okay. Katie Holmes was okay. Even the usual outstanding Morgan Freeman was … okay. It was an okay plot that is [...]

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like a good snowstorm as much as the next guy. Maybe even more than the next guy. I don’t know. I guess it depends on which next guy you pick.
But not in the middle of March. TYVM.

Okay? I mean, I was actually able to get back out on [...]

Back in the saddle

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Finally got back out on the bike. It’s been two months!?!?! It felt good. I guess the winter at the gym made sure I didn’t lose it all. It was nearly 70 degrees out with overcast skies. Wore a vest but no warmers.
I’ve got a ton of work to do and it kept getting later [...]

NHDoT - Bicycle/Pedestrian Center

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Draft maps
NH is one of my favorite places to ride. The cars up there are reasonable friendly for the most part, or at least familiar with bikes being on the roads. Since much of the state is mountainous, there isn’t a lot of choice in roads, but this is welcome all the same.

Montréal-Boston Cycling Tour

Spinning some excitement around the Hub - The Boston Globe
This would be so awesome. Montreal to Boston race, ending in Boston. Naturally, the article almost obsessively dwells on the traffic “problems”. On a Sunday. Ignoring, of course, that traffic on Storrow and the other roads are closed for the 4th and for Patriot’s Day for [...]

Song of the Thin Man

Monday, March 12th, 2007

[netflix] [IMDb]
Nick and Nora must find the killer of a band leader no one liked in the last of the Thin Man movies. This is the weakest of the lot, although there are some good lines. (”Give me a pipe, my slippers, and a beautiful woman and you can keep my pipe and slippers.”) Definitely [...]

MIT Bicycle Study

This is from the latest MassBike newsletter
MIT Bicycle Study
A research team in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT is interested in the changes in the perception and the design of public and private space post 9/11. In looking at public space design, changes in privately-owned space and our shifting attitudes and perceptions [...]

The day the music died

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I sit here all day working in my home office. Most of the time I listen to Internet Radio, usually Radio Paradise, but occasionally SomaFM or some of the others. It keeps me sane and productive. I haven’t listened to commercial radio since I don’t know when. Even public radio has become little more than [...]

Klingelfisch

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Didi Senft is probably best known as the guy who dresses as the devil during the Tour de France. He’s a former amateur racer who also builds crazy bikes including the world’s largest bike.
He’s got a new one. A bike made of 10,000 bicycle bells. In the shape of a fish, a Klingelfisch.

Here’s a video [...]

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

[amazon] [MBLN] [Publisher]
This is one of the most extraordinary books I’ve ever read, If you pick it up, be sure to clear your calendar, because you’re going to read it in one sitting.
Christopher John Francis Boone is a 15-year-old autistic (although that’s never said), a math savant with few, if any, social skills who loves [...]
