Renovations, June 30

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Needed a break, so I took a bike ride. Still, I found Sears had disposals on sale (ending today) so I bought on on line. I’d planned to go pick it up tomorrow, but I don’t seem to be able to sit still any more. So I pedaled over to the Galleria to pick it [...]

Renovations, June 29

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Lots happening today and I got zero billable work done. A friend (thanks!) offered to pick me up at the train and take me over to the place to pick out the slab for the countertop, but I had something scheduled at my client’s and couldn’t get an answer out of them about whether it [...]

Diabetic Man Kicked Off Train, Now Missing - News Story - KIRO Seattle
Not surprising. Or rare.

Renovations, June 28

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Today the step for the tub was built and the shower and bathroom floor was grouted. Not much else to tell. Staying at a friend’s house for a second night until the new toilet can be installed.
Arranged for the countertop template to be made next Tuesday morning between 9 and 10, and the appliances will [...]

Renovations, June 27

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Today, the kitchen floor was grouted, the shower surround ceiling was tiled and the bathroom floor was tiled. I ran to Chestnut hill to pick up the bathroom mirror and sconces, and to Watertown to pick up the last of the tile. Somehow I have to get time to get to Walpole to pick out [...]

Renovations, June 26

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Nothing happened yesterday. Well, nothing w/r/t renovations anyway. I went to Watertown to order more tile, and tried to buy something at Restoration Hardware, but the sales critter was a jerk, so I left. Not sure if I’ll go back there or not. Certainly not when he’s there.
I called the builder guy to talk about [...]

Devil in the White City : Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson.

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

[MBLN] [amazon]
A very well told narrative of the Columbian Exposition a/k/a world’s fair of 1893 in Chicago. America’s greatest architects collaborated to create a stunning venue which, for some reason, has been largely forgotten, but had a tremendous affect of subsequent American life.
The world’s fair immediately prior was in Paris and featured the debut of [...]

Renovations, June 23

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

The plasterer came at 7:00 this morning. Yes, on a Saturday. Zoom, zoom, zoom. That means the rooms will be ready to paint by Wednesday or so. Monday, Tuesday looks like they might be tiling days. Don’t know about that yet. If it is, it’s time for me to move out of here until the [...]

Renovations, June 22

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Nothing happened yesterday. In fact, I didn’t expect them back for the rest of the week, but they came this morning. They poured thinset mixture on the kitchen and bath floors to level them out for tiling which will, apparently, begin on Monday (or maybe Tuesday). Things are moving quickly.

I need to get to Watertown [...]

Renovations, June 20

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Today was all bathroom. But it’s all ready to be plastered and painted.

The room looks a lot bigger now that the box with the tub is gone. (It also smells a lot better now that the dead rat is gone.) The tub and shower fixings are installed. Now, about the tub…
I pretty much just went [...]

Renovations, June 19 (and a bit of the 20th), part II

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Oh, and they found a dead rat in the wall.
Ugh.

Renovations, June 19 (and a bit of the 20th)

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Boy, these guys are fast.
The kitchen drywall is up. The plywood is up on the kitchen ceiling. (I’m having a copper ceiling put in and it needs to be mounted to plywood.) The tub and shower plumbing is roughed in. New studs are in the bathroom where the old ones were weak or cut.
One of [...]

Outriders 2007

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Saturday was the annual Boston to Provincetown ride. It couldn’t have been a nicer day.

It started cold, so I wore my arm and knee warmers, but the short ride from home to the starting line at the BCA told me I overdressed. So I took the warmers off and packed them away before checking my [...]

Hella week

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Holy crap has this been a week.
I honestly thought I was going to have a panic attack yesterday.
My server died Sunday night which meant I had to spend Monday getting and setting up a new machine and all that goes with that.
Demolition started last Thursday. It was done in five hours, but my dog was [...]

Woman finds stolen bike on-line - Local News Updates - The Boston Globe

It’s been a tough couple of days

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Did part of the King’s Tour of the Quabbin on Saturday. Another terrible weather day, although not as bad as last year. Still, heavy rain and cold, so I cut it short and only did 100k, plus one missed turn, for a total of exactly 65 miles. Met a guy named Dave from BRC. We [...]

It has started for reals

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

They came at 7 this morning and are, right this minute, ripping apart my kitchen.
I found out that while I will have a toilet, I will not have any running water. Need to go get a big bubbler of something.
Spent most of last night emptying all the cabinets. My dog is not happy. And I’m [...]

Renovations begin

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

I went to add a “renovations” topic to this here blog thing and found that I’d already done it last February.
That deal fell through, but now it’s about to begin and while it has nothing to do with cycling, it’s likely to consume my life for the next couple of months. I don’t have a [...]

Shichinin no samurai / Seven Samurai

Monday, June 4th, 2007

[netflix] [IMDB]
It’s probably sacrilegious, but I had a hard time getting through this. Blame my 21st century attention span, but this thing is 3½ hours long. I mean, it’s good, but not in one sitting. It took me nearly a week. There’s a welcome intermission at 1:45. The story is great, most of the acting [...]

The Mystery of Cloomber by Arthur Conan Doyle

Monday, June 4th, 2007

[amazon] [MBLN]
After reading the Doyle bio, I wanted to read something non-Holmes from his later career (after he’d gotten into the spiritualistic stuff). So the library had this. A pretty good read, actually, but not much of a mystery. John Fothergill West, veteran of the Afghanistan conflict, takes possession of a manor house on the [...]
