Dark Shadows: The Salem Branch by Lara Parker

[MBLN] [amazon]
Written by the woman who played “Angelique” in the 60’s soap opera, this has a very slow start, but gets quite good towards the end. It starts so slowly, in fact, that I almost put it down. I suppose that’s to be expected in a “novelization” of a soap opera. But about halfway through, [...]

New gadgets

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I got a GPS thingy yesterday. A Garmin xTrex Legend. It should be fun.
According the manual, this thing eats batteries. In “power save” mode, it goes through two AAs in 18 hours. “Power save” means the GPS is off. It didn’t come with a handlebar mount, so I’ll have to go get one of those.
There [...]

GSW Tri-state

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I did the Granite State Wheelmen’s Tri-state century on Saturday. Beautiful day for the most part. A killer wind on the way back, though.
I got there at 7:00 sharp and already had to park in the overflow lot! It was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it. Of course, last year it was pouring rain. [...]

Puppy news

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I decided to go for a ride yesterday (first one since the August heat meltdown) and while I was out, I got a call from the veterinary oncologist I have an appointment with next month. Color me surprised! She said someone sent her a link to this blog with the questions I had about the [...]

Boy, do I have mixed feelings about this.

With paths, racks, and a czar, Mayor Menino vowing to make Boston a bike-friendly city - The Boston Globe
While I think these ideas are long, long, long, long overdue, the cynic in me can’t help but be skeptical.
On the one hand, I really sort of wonder if Menino will ever do something because it’s the [...]

More puppy tumor news

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Made an appointment with Dr. Turek at the oncology department at Angell Memorial. It’s for Wed Oct 5, two weeks from today. Who knew there would be such a backlog?
I talked with “Gary” about the paperwork from South Bay. There may be something else going on here too. He said the test results showed “Spindle [...]

Hemangiopericytoma

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Got a callback from the vet today with the lab results.

Hemangiopericytoma
I suppose that’s about as good a news as I could have expected. She said that it was only a tentative diagnosis because they can’t be 100% sure from only a needle aspirate, but she was pretty confident as she’s seen them before. She said [...]

The Monster Men by Edgar Rice Burroughs

[MBLN] [amazon] [Literature.org] [Gutenberg]
Professor Maxon takes his aide, Chinese sidekick, and daughter to an island off Borneo to continue with experiments that would be frowned upon in polite society. Namely, creating life. Which he does. Sort of. He creates horribly misshapen, “soulless” creatures with the eventual intent of creating a perfect one to marry his [...]

The Curse of the Holy Pail : An Odelia Grey Mystery by Sue Ann Jaffarian

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

[MBLN] [amazon]
Odelia Grey is an overweight paralegal who solves mysteries. Everyone needs a gimmick, I guess. This one mostly works, but I’m still left with a bit of a feeling that the author is trying to find some way to stand out in the overcrowded “gumshoe with a gimmick” market. Doubly so when we find [...]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

[MBLN] [amazon]
I’m probably the last one to read this, but whatevs.
It’s great, what can I say. Rowling is a master at creating an effect and a mood. It’s like you’re there. This edition wraps the whole thing up. It could be argued that it wraps things up a little too neatly, but OTOH, she effectively [...]

TBV says 10 more days

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

trust but verify: Tick, tick, tick…
10 days to a decision. Then the appeals start.

C?

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

I gave my dog a bath on Saturday night and discovered a big growth on his leg. It’s about and inch and a half long and hard. We just came back from the vet and she didn’t like the look of it. She took samples for the pathologist. The results should be back early next [...]

Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France by Floyd Landis

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

[amazon] [MBLN]
Three days after winning the 2006 Tour de France, Floyd Landis was accused of doping. This is Landis’ side of the story.
Regardless of your view as to whether he’s guilty or not (it’s still working its way through arbitration, more than a year later), he makes a compelling and convincing case that the [...]
