On the Wing by Eric Kraft
Book two of Flying: A Trilogy. (Book one is Taking Off).
Peter Leroy and his wife Albertine embark on their trek in the one-of-a-kind Electro-Flyer to recreate Peter’s cross-country journey he made with his home-make aerocycle, Spirit of Babbington, when he was 15. The book chapters alternate between Peter’s teenage journey in the aerocycle and the present day journey with Albertine.
I have two complaints about the book. One is that it’s far too short. The second is that this book is so new, I’m going to have to wait a year for part 3. I loved it. I LOLed. From the story of Peter nearly being lynched by people in a New Jersey town still traumatized by Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast, to witnessing first hand the plane-truck crash after the bus drops off Cary Grant in North by Northwest, to being mistaken for an extraterrestrial in New Mexico, Land of Enchantment, it’s all good.
I can’t wait for the next installment.
