Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Hero / Ying xiong
Beowulf
Yojimbo
Zero Hour!

Taking Off by Erik Kraft
Our American King : A Novel by David Lozell Martin
Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie

Cycling of 2007

Monday, December 31st, 2007

A very down year, comparatively. Only 1681 recorded miles. There’s probably another 800-1000 in commuting and other around-town stuff that I don’t record, but still, pretty low. Renovations screwed up most of it as two of the bikes ended up in the cellar during all the work, and are still there. I haven’t been on [...]

A better night

Monday, December 31st, 2007

The vet called at about 9:00 saying she’d sent a prescription for prednisone over to the CVS on Boylston St. It’s the only pharmacy in the city open 24 hours, can you believe that? A city of 600,000 and one all-night pharmacy?

So I went over and the lone pharmacist was swamped. Really. How unfair is [...]

A scary night

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

My dog has been having more and more trouble breathing. Well, not breathing, really, but the congestion rumbling in his chest and his cough have been getting gradually worse. Last night, I though I was going to have to make an emergency trip to the vet.
He woke me up at 2:30 and again at 3:30 [...]

Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

[MBLN] [amazon]
I think this is the last Agatha Christie book in the library that I hadn’t already read.
An anonymous letter arrives for Elinor that says someone is trying to divert Elinor’s (assumed) inheritance from here ailing aunt. She visits the aunt with her cousin-betrothed and discovers nothing terribly out of place, but that a childhood [...]

Planet Terror

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

[netflix] [IMDb] [amazon]
Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan) quits her job as a pole dancer and meets up with her ex “El Wray” (Freddie Rodriguez - the actor, not the cyclist) and together they find themselves in the midst of a zombie war brought on by the release of a mysterious chemical agent.
Everything about this is perfect, [...]

Don’t know who the guy is he’s following, but he’s clearly insane.
In. Sane.

Crash

Pretty spectacular crash from down under. I love the cartwheel guy. Looks like it hurt though.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Friday, December 14th, 2007

[netflix] [IMDb]
Barely watchable.
I mean, I know Adams did a lot of tinkering with the story in its various incarnations, but this thing was … um … words fail me. Ford (Mos Def) was barely there. Zaphod (Sam Rockwell) had far too big of a very annoying role. Trillian (Zooey Deschanel) phoned it in. Marginally better [...]

Should I put on my studded tires or wait it out? Hmmmm…

I’m back

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

That was a difficult trip. I hadn’t been back there in 15 years. The town is still dying, I’m pleased to say. There were about 14,000 people when I lived there in high school. There are about 9,000 now.
The funeral ceremony was  a bit too jesusy for me, but then it wasn’t for me, so [...]

Off to Ohio

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

A death in the family is taking me back to Ohio. I think the last time I was there was about 15 or 20 years ago to attend the funeral of my grandmother. I’m leaving tonight and will be back on Monday night. The funeral is Friday.
