Schultze Gets the Blues

[newflix] [IMDb]

After working all his life in the mines, Schultze, an accordion wielding polka player, gets forcibly retired and ends up with nothing to do. Intensely bored and his wife in a nursing home, he hears a zydeco tune on the radio one day and his musical tastes are suddenly broadened and transformed.

A good premise and I had high hopes, but ultimately this fell flat. While beautifully photographed, the cinematography would have been better suited to a Philip Glass accompaniment. I mean, I really do like slice-of-life, melancholy films, but this was so slow moving as to almost be standing still.

I really did wanted to like and thought that, maybe after a day or two of thinking about it, its inner beauty would reveal itself to me. Nope. If you watch the trailer (at Netflix), you’ve seen the entire movie. For me, it just didn’t work.
