The Lord of the Rings : Fellowship of the Rings
[netflix] [IMDB] [lordoftherings.net]
No, I hadn’t seen this until now. I really, really like these books and was afraid of seeing the movie after so many failed efforts at bringing it to the screen before.
Who doesn’t know the story by now? Bilbo rides of into the sunset and leaves his nephew, Frodo, to dispose of the ring by taking a long, arduous journey to Mt. Doom. Along the way, much happens.
I have to say I was, overall, pleasantly surprised by the film. It was reasonably faithful to the book although it did have to leave a bit out in spite of the 200+ minute runtime. My one big complaint is the music. It’s completely overpowering and distracting. Music is supposed to complement a film, not be a main character. Yet all throughout, the music kept plucking strings like “here’s a scary part” or “here’s a funny part” and whatever. It’s almost worth seeing if there’s a music-less version in the seemingly endless supply of “theatre”, “extended”, “special extended”, “hyper-extended special remix” versions.
Most of the characters are as I pictured them although I have to say I never pictured Orcs to be slimy. I always pictured them as sort of rock and dust, not slime and ooze.
I look forward to part 2.
