700c x 18/23 - 48mm presta tubes: 3@4.45: 13.35

Decided to get a wider spread of teeth for this year’s NEC. Some of those hills were tough with the 11/21 I’ve got now, and since my miles are way down this year, I decided [...]

Northwest 70

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Did about 70 miles yesterday. Went northwest to Westford-Littleton and back through the Actons and Concord. I stopped at Kimball’s but did not buy ice cream!
I’m still amazed at how few cars there are on the road. The jerks all seem to be in SUVs, but only ran into three of those. The roads really [...]

Is Pluto a Planet : A Historical Journey Through the Solar System by David Weintraub

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

[amazon] [MBLN]
Author David Weintraub is Professor of Astronomy at Vanderbilt.
There has long been a debate about whether or not Pluto is really a planet. Is it or isn’t it? In order to answer that question, one must first decide exactly what a planet is. A recent discovery, 2003 UB313, a trans-Neptune Object, is thought to [...]

The naked gardener

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I had some errands to run yesterday (out to REI, among other things) which took me along the Fenway Victory Gardens. On the way back, I spotted the naked gardener.  He wasn’t naked, but he was gardening. We talked peonies. It was a short conversation. He’s taller and skinner than I expected.

Puppy sitting

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Spent most of the week puppy sitting for some friends who wanted a mini-vacation in P-town. She’s a seven-year-old Jack Russell terrier who’s gone through a bit of a rough stretch lately. Still, we got on pretty well and only had two minor incidents. One floor wetting (not spotted for a while) and one chewed [...]

Southwest

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Yesterday, I’d planned on riding CRW’s spring century, but I overslept. I’m glad I did. I needed it.
I’d missed the train to Wakefield, so decided just to do a ride of my own, so I decided on southwest (Dover, Sherborn, Medfield). It was a very nice day, and there were a few other riders out [...]

Unstructured playtime

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Knox and Victor are in town. Or were in town. I guess they leave today. Or something.
So they, with their friend Kevin, dropped in to go see the South End a bit, maybe have a nosh and a drink, so that’s what we did. Earlier, another friend, John, had dropped over. A very rare occurrence, [...]

Here’s a riddle

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Q: What do you call a guy who hangs out with a bunch of musicians?
A: A drummer.
Unless, of course, it’s the late, great Gene Krupa, arguably one of the best, and unquestionably one of the most influential drummers evar.
And so, a musical interlude: Massachusetts by Gene Krupa (feat. Anita O’Day)

Menino pedals for cycle-friendly city - The Boston Globe
Considering his past records, it’s hard to believe Menino has his heart in this, but you take what you can get and this can’t be a bad thing. While biking in to work today (Tuesday is on-site at the client day) I saw more bikes on the [...]

I’m knackered

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Got out for about 50 miles yesterday. It was way, way colder than I thought. I took my jacket but not knee warmers, and it was mighty chilly on the return. Maybe that’s why I’m so stiff today. But for only 50 miles, I shouldn’t be this tired.
Still, it was a pretty day, the sun [...]

Creature Comforts America

Monday, May 12th, 2008

[netflix] [IMDb] [http://www.creaturecomforts.tv/]
This is the American version of Nick Park’s Creature Comfort but before you shrink back in horror, it was actually done by Aardman, so it’s okay, you can watch. It hasn’t been destroyed like 95% of British adaptations.
This time the interview Americans for their peculiar brand of claymation. The interviewees really seems heavily [...]

Cyclism on Hulu

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Cyclism (Verses nee OLN’s Sunday night cycling show) has started posting clips on Hulu.com. There aren’t many yet, but if you’re not a cyclist and want to see a few short (5 min or less) clips of Yerpian races, it’s a good place to start. The shows are only an hour long, so I don’t [...]

Whoa, time is whizzing by

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

I normally do the Portsmouth TdC ride. Because it starts so early, I usually get a Zipcar for the day, but the daily price of those has gone up so much, I’ve been debating whether to do the Portsmouth ride or not. So I just went over to the NEC website– a site which I [...]

Master and Commander

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

I tried for six weeks to read this. I got to chapter five. I gave up.
Maybe it’s good, but I just wasn’t in the mood. It’s the first in the series so he spends pages and pages and pages describing what each sail and line is called and what the purpose of it is.
I was [...]

Creature Comforts

Monday, May 5th, 2008

[netflix] [IMDb] [http://www.creaturecomforts.tv/]
A series of 10-minute shorts inspired by and derived from the original Creature Comforts, a short film by Nick Park, the guy who gave us Wallace and Gromit. This is just so well done. It’s laugh out loud funny in many places. They take man-in-the-street interviews, then animate them with their trademark claymation.
I [...]
