Bike week
Menino pedals for cycle-friendly city - The Boston Globe
Considering his past records, it’s hard to believe Menino has his heart in this, but you take what you can get and this can’t be a bad thing. While biking in to work today (Tuesday is on-site at the client day) I saw more bikes on the road than ever before. My guess is that, even though gas prices have been climbing mercilessly, people still need permission to start riding to work, and bike week gives them that.
I passed an old lady puffing her way down Columbus Avenue, although, to be fair, she looked like an old hand at this and there was a very stiff headwind. I said “Good Morning” and she said “hu-hu-hi”. I saw more than a dozen riders and my clients office is only about a mile from my house.
My Tuesday Commute (this isn’t exact, Google doesn’t let you route on non-roads - I cut through the Common, and go the wrong way for ½ block to avoid insanely dangerous Charles Street).
My ride is short enough that I don’t get all stinky, so I can wear regular work clothes (all hail convertible pants). I saw people in everything from dress clothes to spandex to messenger grunge. It was really kind of cool, and the first time I had to be careful crossing an intersection to keep from colliding with bike traffic. The intersection of Boylston & Charles goes all red, pedestrian only so I can cross diagonally from Charles into the Common (as can everyone else) - I’m not running lights!
