Southwest

Yesterday, I’d planned on riding CRW’s spring century, but I overslept. I’m glad I did. I needed it.

I’d missed the train to Wakefield, so decided just to do a ride of my own, so I decided on southwest (Dover, Sherborn, Medfield). It was a very nice day, and there were a few other riders out and about. The weather varied between sunny and mostly cloudy and it was about 65 degrees.

I don’t know if it’s my imagination, but I could swear there were far fewer cars on the road. It’s the first ride of the season out that direction, so I could be wrong, but it seemed far more vacant to me.

I had a puncture flat (glass) on the way back, somewhere near some golf course near Larz Anderson Park. While fixing it the tires look pretty cut up, so I’ll have to swap those out pretty soon. Certainly before July. I was pretty impressed with those Park Tools pre-glued patches, though. All you have to do is be careful to keep your dirty fingers off the glue (not an easy thing). I don’t get enough flats to carry around a vulcanizing kit.

I had better luck with the GPS this time. I’m still trying to figure out how to download the stuff off of it so I can actually use it. Still, it kept from getting lost this time. I tried doubling back on my route instead of coming back via the marathon route, which can be pretty nasty. But I always have trouble at this rotary, picking the wrong fork and heading off to who knows where. Last time I got twisted around and ended up going back the way I came.

Didn’t see any deer this time, but I did see some sort of grouse or some sort of ground bird. Brown feathers with white spots, larger than a quail, smaller than a turkey, with a red and light blue comb, short tail.
