A Mighty Wind

[netflix] [IMDb]

This could easily be described as a Spinal Tap for folk music. The whole Second City crew is here again (after Watiting for Guffman, For Your Consideration, and Best in Show) for another winner. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, but the real humor is in the absurdity of it all.

Irving Steinbloom was agent to at least three of the top folk acts of the 50s and 60s and now he’s dead. His son decides to create a memorial concert and reassemble the acts that have long since disolved. The film follows their rehersals, interspersed with interviews about their lives since their heyday.

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer (the core of Spinal Tap) were the Folksmen, Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy were Mitch and Mickey, and then there are the New Main Street Singers (who have one original member who just sort of sits there). The  usual cast is here as well: Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, and the rest.

It lacks some of the punch of the previous films, and nothing will ever match Spinal Tap, but it’s well worth the time.
