I had planned to write more here since the trip, but I’ve been trying to keep the NEC site alive and people enthused, so I’ve been slacking off here. I need to get my thank-you letter written, but I plan to do that this weekend some time. Also, now that I have my eeePC, I [...]

Today was really the only day I had available to work on the bike before leaving next Friday. (Is it really next Friday? Why, yes. Yes, it is.) So I took it over to Broadway Bike School to get a stand to work on it. The place was hopping, in spite of them saying [...]

From BikeTiresDirect.com
SRAM PC-991 9-Speed Chain : 25.46
SRAM PG-970 9 Speed Cassette (11/32): 37.36
700c x 18/23 - 48mm presta tubes: 3@4.45: 13.35
Decided to get a wider spread of teeth for this year’s NEC. Some of those hills were tough with the 11/21 I’ve got now, and since my miles are way down this year, I decided [...]

The cog in my SS has been grinding lately, and it’s been getting worse, so I took it over to Broadway yesterday to see if there was anything that could be done about it. Not much, apparently, as it’s not really serviceable. Plus, he said the thing was only about $15-$16, so really, what’s the [...]

Picked up some inexpensive fenders for the SS at REI. I’m tired of getting my shoes wet.

Had a bunch of errands to run today, so after all that, I stopped at Broadway Bicycle School to true the wheels of my IRO. The brakes still squeak, but at least I can get the pads closer to the rim so it doesn’t feel so squishy.
I accidentally blew a tube while refilling the rear [...]

I broke down and bought another nother chain. A SRAM 971 from the LBS. Full list price, of course. I’ll take the other one back to REI on Sunday or Monday. Is the 971 that much better than the 951? I don’t know. Probably not.
At least I won’t be distracted all day tomorrow about whether [...]

Went to REI last night and bought another new chain. I’m just not sure if I’ll have time to install it before tomorrow. If I don’t, I’ll probably take it back as the only chain they had wasn’t really the one I wanted. All they had was a SRAM 951 and I was after the [...]

I worked on the problem chain a bit tonight. There were at least a dozen stiff links in addition to the frozen one. I called REI and they have no chains in stock at all after their Labor Day sales! (How can that be?) But he said their shipments usually arrive on Tuesdays and Wednesdays [...]

I think– at least I hope– I have the frozen link fixed. There seemed to be about six or seven links that were very very difficult to turn, although only one was really stuck. I don’t quite understand why that is. I loosened them all up and hope that I did it right and that [...]

Got some brake pads from REI Saturday and installed them today on the SS. The ones it (the SS) came with were ultra cheap and just sort of dissolved into a black goo that gets all over everything when it rains. So I got some Aztecs. Now the front brake squeals like you wouldn’t believe [...]

Swapped out the old chain for a new Wipperman. The old one was borderline, but not yet too far gone. I’m hoping this will eliminate the grinding feel from yesterday’s ride.

During the ride today I noticed the headset was a little loose, so when I got back I took it into the LBS or an adjustment. I’d have done it myself, but I don’t have the tools and I’ve never done a threadless headset. It’s a good thing, too. The threads on the thing were [...]
